Wanderlei Training At Wanderlei Gym

Wanderlei Silva's Gym Las VegasThe guys and I got to train at Wanderlei Gym in Las Vegas this weekend. To have access to the same Wanderlei training tools as Wanderlei himself has, was, well, really, really freak’n awesome!

So we left the hotel with Kevin feeling a little green from drinking a 64OZ beer the night before… well that was part of his greenness :-) Jumped into a cab that we didn’t get ripped off on like the night before and off we went.

The guys that train at Wanderlei Gym were great. We learned a ton and they made us feel totally welcome while training with them.

We started off Jiu-Jitsu training with free rolling for an hour. We changed training partners every five minutes for eight rounds. Our coach for this training session was 6 time Brazilian champion and two time world champion, Vitor Vianna. He was beyond cool. It was a great class and he did a great job of matching us up with his guys that were of similar skill level. THANK GOD.

After Jiu-Jitsu for 60 minutes we grabbed some water and stuck around Wanderlei Gym for a boxing class with Mike Smith. Mike Smith is the boxing instructor we had for the boxing class at Wanderlei gym that day. Mike started boxing at 15 in Brooklyn New York and has 70 amateur fights under his belt. He is also a Desert Storm vet that has produced 10 New York City Golden Gloves champions among his slew of champions he has produced.

Mike was super cool and laid back. We asked if we could have a picture with him and he said “Sure! Want it in the cage?” Um… YA! So that’s where the pic below came from. From left to right its me, Kevin, Mike and Derek.

Mike was quick to step in as well when I caught a few too many shots to the head and gave me kitten mitten status so I didn’t get mauled. It was really great to be able to learn and train without worrying about getting hurt badly.

Wanderlei Gym is really well set up. They have a pro shop, child care with a little play set (cool), a cage, awesome matting and a cage of heavy and and Muay Thai bags. The actual gym area is VERY cool. They have all the toys you would expect in a regular gym as well as the cool stuff you see in the latest MMA training centres. Things like rings, tractor tires, bar complexes (jungle gym), a climbing rope and on and on. It’s a trainers dream to have all this stuff around. Another cool thing about Wanderlei Gym is that they have a loading door that they can roll up in the summer. The door goes into the huge parking lot you can see in the video. Tons of fun to be had there for sure.

Now that the training at Wanderlei Silva’s Gym was over the guys visited the pro shop and checked some stuff out. I went outside to see if I could find a cab. I’d recommend phoning one because they don’t drive by here as much as they do on the strip. Duh. Anyway, Gabe Casillas pulls up and offers us a ride to the hotel so we don’t have to catch a cab! How sweet is that? Pretty cool stuff.

If I had to pick something bad out of all this, it would only be that I didn’t visit Wanderlei Gym sooner. It’s an awesome place to train with a great bunch of guys and amazingly talented coaches.
