Running Music Increases Performance By 20%

I don’t know many people that do cardio anymore that can be seen without and ipod or at least some earphones on their head as they pound away on the treadmill. When you start to fade a little, that bass kicking in can push you harder and harder. Actually, research at Brunel University showed that music while running can enhance your performance by up to 20%. I’m in :-)

I’ve actually had a few road workouts where I picked some really uptempo electronic music and came darn near barfing. It’s like you don’t even realize you’re getting tired because the music is so kicking.

So… guess what the smart people over at running music. So what’s the difference between just hitting a few tracks from Metallica and actual “running music?”. Well in their own words, the music is composed specifically for running with a beat to exactly match your stride and push you harder whatever your pace happens to be. Pretty cool idea.

They let you download a 15-16 minute track for free so you can try it out and see what the deal is. You have to enter your email though and the last thing I need is another bunch of welcome emails and “check out my products” so I took a pass and can’t tell you if the tune is any good or not.

What’s my take? I find it coincidental that their testimonial states an exact 20% increase in running performance right beside the study that showed running to music can increase performance by up to 20% but that’s probably just my paranoid delusion speaking. Other than that the idea is super sound. I mean, you can get a pumping track for free (well, your email) to check it out and with the paid music you can get voice over coaching to bring you through the warmup, run and cool down.

Great stuff if you’re needing some extra motivation and would like a coaches voice to accompany you on your run.
