I just ordered your program yesterday and I have a question.
I’m thinking of starting a Doctor monitored Protein Sparing Modified Fast Diet next week and I wondering what your feeling was on this diet.
I’ve done the necessary blood test and physical before they would let me in the program.
The weight loss is fast and I was thinking it would be healthier to get the weight off and then build up the muscle from a lower weight.
Currently I’m 52 years old, 6 ft tall and weigh 295 pounds. I’ve exercised on and off but never staying with it long enough to get anywhere.
Of course at a younger age I was in the Marine Corp and was very fit. So I know what it takes to get lean but it is harder now that I’m older.
My plan is to start the diet but also start your fat to fit program at the 1 set level and 20 minute cardio 3 days a week.
What is your opinion on this?
Regards,
Bernie

Hi Bernie, I don’t think it’s a great idea at all. Having said that, I am not a doctor either and what I say is simply my opinion as a professional personal trainer.
Fasts just simply are not the way to go in my experience unless there are SEVERE risks if the weight doesn’t come off NOW. Even then, its a battle to keep it off along with the rebound effect that is very hard on the body.
I also believe that you are better to make your body functional and strong by building muscle, burning fat, increasing flexibility and improving cardio all at the same time on a well structured diet and exercise plan. The increase in muscle will speed up the weight loss any way.
I hope that let’s you know how I feel.

The protein sparing modified fast diet is a very good one. It’s not so much a fast as a removal of carbs and other limits. Best thing is you lose your appetite within about 4 days and it’s downhill from there. Been on it two weeks and have lost over 20 pounds. It’s a great diet, but you need to do it with a dietician because you need to take supplements and the diet can be very dangerous if done alone.
I also forgot there is a re-feeding process in which they reintroduce carbs over a few weeks and also work to change your eating habits so the the weight stays off.
I started a Doctor monitored PSMF fast diet last week. I have lost 13 lbs in the 8 days that I have been on the diet.
I got interested in this diet when I saw 5-7 people I know well have great success on it. For the most part that have kept the weight off since ending the diet.
I’ve been the same weight 210-220 for the past 10-15 years. My diet has been “ok” but over the years I put on the weight and it has stayed there. I figure that when I get to my goal weight of 170 and wean on this PSMF diet and back to my regular diet I’ll keep and eye on portion size and check the scale weekly.
I also must say I have never dieted in the past – always heard horror stories – but this diet is easy and the food has been fine. I do miss milk, pasta, etc… But I feel the short term I’ll be on the diet (2-20-09 – 04-05-09) will be well worth the minimal sacrifice.
If you visit my site above you will see that I am keeping a record of my diet, weight loss and the meals/recipes that I am using.
Dave’s last blog post..Week 1 – PSMF Diet and Resulting Weight Loss
I have been on PSMF past 3 weeks and i`ve lost a total of 18 pounds so far am very happy with my result ..its not thats hard as people say very easy for me i don`t even workout that much,if i do something is just 15 mins eleptical every 2 days, and i follow up with my doctor weekly for blood pressure, weight check aswell as a lipo shot and Bcomplex shot.
I would encourage u to go ahead and do this program but must supervised by a doctor.its the best and true diet out there.
I’m doing a doctor supervised 90 day PSMF right now. I have lost large amounts of weight in the past but I have never tried any kind if rigorous or consistent physical fitness program when I am thin. I have every intenion of doing so this time. It is so hard to try training when I am morbidly obese. My last day of the PSMF this time around will be November 6th. I plan to keep losing and working out through the holidays and will do another 90 day fast if I need to.
