Gemfibrozil is a lipid regulating medication which decreases serum triglycerides and toal cholesterol, and increases high density lipoprotein cholesterol.
Gemfibrozil treatment of patients with elevated triglycerides due to Type 4 hyperlipoproteinemia may cause a rise in LDL cholesterol. In addition , gemfibrozil increases the high density lipoprotein HDL as well as apolipoproteins A1 and A2.
Gemfibrozil Side Effects
Gemfibrozil has been carefully evaluated in over 3000 patients having received the medication in
monitored clinical studies prior to marketing. Most side effects were related to the
gastrointestinal system. Nausea and vomiting and abdominal and epigastic pain occurred more often in the gemfibrozil group than in the
placebo group.
Gemfibrozil side effect occurance was generally found to be 2-3% higher in the group that used gemfibrozil than the placebo.
Caution must be used when using Gemfibrozil not to overdose. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, abnomal LFTs, diarrhea, increased CPK, joint and muscle pain and vomiting.
Gemfibrozil Dosage
The recommended dosage for adults is 1200 mg administered in 2 seperate doses, 30 minutes before the morning and evening meal. The maximum
daily dose of Gemfibrozil is 1500 mg.
Gemfibrozil comes in 300 mg and 600 mg doses.
Gemfibrozil 300 mg: Each maroon and white capsule contains 300 mg gemfibrozil and other non medicinal ingrediants.
Gemfibrozil 600 mg: Each shite ellipsoidal film coated tablet is imprinted "Lopid 600 mg" on one side and "Parke-Davis" on the
other. Each pill contains 600 mg gemfibrozil and other non medicinal ingrediants.
All pills should be stored between 15 - 30 degrees or room temperature.
