The drug Amoxil or Amoxicillin is a moderate-spectrum ß-lactam antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. These may be infections of the chest (pneumonia), tonsils (tonsillitis), sinuses (sinusitis), urinary and genital tract, skin and fleshy tissues. Amoxil can also be used to prevent infection.

The drug Amoxil is usually the choice within this class because it is better absorbed, following oral administration, than other beta-lactam antibiotics. Amoxicillin is susceptible to degradation by ß-lactamase-producing bacteria, and so may be given with clavulanic acid to increase its susceptability (see below). It is currently marketed by GlaxoSmithKline under the trade name Amoxil®.

The drug Amoxil works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It inhibits cross-linkage between the linear peptidoglycan polymer chains that make up a major component of the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria.

Since the patent for amoxicillin has expired many other companies have come out with thier own name brand. Thus amoxicillin is marketed under many trade names including: Actimoxi®, Amoxil® Amoxibiotic®, Amoxicilina®, Pamoxicillin®, Lamoxy®, Ospamox®, Polymox®, Trimox®, Tolodina®, Wymox® and Zimox®.
