Is Early Morning Cardio Worth It?
Well its now 9:57 at night and I want to play on the computer but I know that I have to get up at 5AM to do commando cardio. Its a small class in the morning because most people are in la-la land catching some sleep.
I'm just like everyone else, I'd like to stay in bed and sleep too but there is a reason I do it. Early morning cardio is some of the best cardio you can do. Why is that? Well first off all, if you manage to get yourself out of bed and do it, its done. For the rest of the day you can relax and know that you have already paid your dues to the cardio gods.
While your enjoying that feeling you can also rest easy in the fact that your metabolism is already running at full tilt. You've burnt half a days calories before most people get out of bed. Even cooler thing about early morning cardio is that your already running on empty because of the sleep you just had, so your burning fat for fuel from minute one as apposed to the 16 minutes in it takes if you have fuel in your gut.
Waking up early also means you eat earlier and have more meals in the day. More small meals means a jump in the metabolism also because each time you eat, your metabolism jumps up to digest that food.
So there are lots of benefits to morning cardio...you just need to kick the covers off. Guess I better get to bed, 7 hours till I have to burn some fat and see my abs!

Well commando cardio class is done but I thought I would write a little about stiches or stomach cramps during exercise.
What causes that pain under the ribs when you do cardio? Well a "side stitch" is a sharp, intense pain under the lower edge of the ribcage caused by a muscle spasm of the diaphragm. What exactly causes a side stitch? When you breath, you take air into the lungs, pressing the diaphragm downward. When you exhale, the diaphragm moves up. If the body has some trapped air/gas below the diaphragm or if you've eaten too close to exercise, or if you start exercising too vigorously, the diaphragm may cramp, causing pain under the rib cage on the right side. So a side stitch is just a charley horse in your diaphram!
How do you make them go away? Well like any cramp, you stretch it. Slow down and breath deep and long to relax the muscle and for some reason when we were in the army, sucking on a pebble also does the trick. Why? I have no idea!
For me, if I'm going to run, I have to run by noon (ideally at 6:00 a.m. but if it's not done by noon it just ain't worth it). Running after noon is always a far less pleasant experience. Mentally and physically, exercising in the morning is best for me.
Hey, Welcome PJ! I agree, running in the morning can be a great time to get your thoughts together, get some time to yourself, kind of the zen of cardio type thing.
Seems like trying to run later in the day is more like playing frogger if you live in the city and it becomes a chore to fit it in! Not to mention chugging back your fair share of carbon dioxide!
Thanks for the post.
Have a page that goes into the benefits of morning cardio a little deeper on on the site here.

Article states that early morning cardio can boost fat burning by up to 300%!? Not sure how thats measured but sounds good to me!
