What is ZMA

ZMA is a combination of two minerals (zinc and magnesium, the Z and A) and usually vitamin B6. Zinc and magnesium are sometimes not adequately supplied in the diet, while vitamin B6 generally is. The zinc and magnesium comes in two chemical forms; methionine and aspartate. In ZMA, the magnesium and zinc are in the aspartate form (there is the "A" in ZMA).

Is ZMA Safe?

ZMA is a pretty safe product. Here are the results of taking too much ZMA:
Zinc: More than 50 mg daily increases the need for dietary copper; more than 100 mg daily might cause toxic symptoms.

Magnesium: More than 1000 mg daily might cause diarrhea.

Vitamin B6: More than 200 mg per day may lead to peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain in the extremities).

Most ZMA formulas contain;
Zinc: 30mg
Magnesium: 450mg
Vitamin B6: 11mg

So with the majority of ZMA products, there is little risk of any side effects.

Does ZMA Work?

A study claiming that ZMA increases anabolic hormones and strength in athletes was conducted by L. R. Brilla, Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA, and V. Conte, BALCO Laboratories, Burlingame, CA.

Basically what the study showed was that if you exercise intensely, your zinc and magnesium levels will drop. With lower levels of these nutrients, your hormone production wont be optimum.

Other studies show that supplementing with 30mg of Zinc and 450mg of Magnesium per day in the form of ZMA can elevate testosterone levels up to 30%! Depending of course on how low your testosterone levels were in the first place.

Another benefit of ZMA is better sleep. ZMA should be taken 30 - 60 minutes before bed. Most people notice they can fall asleep quicker and then sleep more deeply once asleep when using ZMA.

Bottom Line On ZMA?

If you work out intensely, then your magnesium and zinc levels are probably lower than they should be if your diet is not top notch. In my opinion, I love ZMA. I have always felt, trained and slept better when taking ZMA.
